Putting down my phone and just looking at how people spend their idle time, I can see how ubiquitous smartphone has become to our lives. Facebook browsing in one phone, Pokémon hunting on the other. It seems everyone wants a distraction from living in the Now. What is wrong with the Now, anyway?
Just a few minutes away from my phone and I have already found seeds for this article. No wonder people back then were more creative. More sensitive to the nuances of daily living. More in touch with reality. They had less distractions in the form of smartphones.
Someone placed an earphone, perhaps to listen to music. They listen to music to lighten their dull commute downtime. Little do they know that they're drowning the cacophony of living sounds around them. It may not be rhythmical and devoid of any lyrics but it's the closest to reality that they can get.
Facebook went down, people lose their marbles. Snapchat went out for a few moments, people go crazy. An earthquake happened, people tweet about it. Social media has become a hub where people "interact" through virtual profiles whilst their blood-and-flesh personas walk around, head faced downwards to their phonescreens, miraculously dodging other people who walk with their heads down, too. I have been in this situation and even after writing this, I may still catch myself unaware of being in such a conundrum. But I'll be more aware. More insightful of being too fixated to my phone, and being more attached to the real world.
